Education Development

Education is an important catalyst for socio-economic development, industrial growth and an instrument for empowering the poor, the weak and the voiceless. The Malawi Government is currently implementing a number of reforms in order to improve the current situation. Efforts are being made:

To increase access to learning at all levels;
Improve the quality and relevance of the education being provided;
Improve equity, management and supervision; and
Improve the training of more teachers for both primary and secondary school levels.

Although the Malawi Government has declared a policy of “free universal primary education” for all school going children, this policy has had its problems in terms of implementation. The relevance of education has also been negatively affected by lack of timely reviews and reforms of the school curricula, consistent with the current national needs and aspirations of the country.

Accordingly, the aim of Government as regards education in Malawi, is to equip students, especially at the basic education level, with basic knowledge and skills to enable them function as competent and productive citizens; at secondary level, to provide the academic basis for gainful employment in informal, private and public sectors; and at tertiary level, to produce high quality professionals, with relevant knowledge and skills in relevant fields.

Within the framework of these broad objectives and priorities identified by the Malawi Government in the educational sector, members of the Karonga Central Constituency, including politicians, chiefs, teachers, and civil society would consult extensively in order to add substance and agree on modalities for up scaling education in the area.

This would lead to the identification of actionable activities that would need to be undertaken with the assistance of Government and the donor community to up grade schools in the area.

The quality and delivery of the curriculum would be improved by the provision of further training for qualified teachers in classroom skills and modern technology.
