Social Development

The broad objective of a development strategy has to be to raise the welfare of a country’s population through sustainable development. A healthy and educated population is necessary to achieve sustainable economic growth. A major objective of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy is to build a healthy and educated population in Malawi. Indeed, major sectors of the economy require an educated, skilled and healthy workforce to take on new challenges and absorb new technologies in production processes and marketing. Accordingly, the Malawi Government has committed itself to address these two issues of health and education in a coherent manner under one theme, “Social Development”. Considering the impact that HIV and AIDS as well as malnutrition are having on the Malawi economy, the Government has also placed these as key priorities for the short to medium term plan. The Government’s overall goal is to develop human capital for full participation in the socio-economic and political development of the country.
